Women & Girls Cricket Starting At Merton CC In 2023!
Hot on the heels of launching ECB All Stars in 2022, Merton Cricket Club are delighted to be launching a women & girls softball section from 2023 onwards!
Â
Have the females in your family, or circle of friends, or even in the workplace, been inspired to take a fresh look at cricket recently? Maybe it's been the Women's Hundred, or the Ashes, or the T20 World Cup, or the brand-new Women's IPL. Well, if you'd like to take up a new sport and give it a go without worrying about being experienced, possessing the ability or being super-fit, then join Merton CC on our inaugural journey into women's softball!Â
Â
We are looking to assemble a squad between now and the end of April, with the purpose of entering some local softball cricket festivals (Beddington CC and Banstead CC to name two) during the summer. Festivals take place of a weekday evening or a Sunday daytime (generally around three/four hours long), and you don't need expensive kit, clothing and be a club member. The emphasis is on fun, meeting new people, having a go at a sport, and getting some fresh air to go with the summer sun on your back - no pressure to perform or succeed, it's enthusiasm and enjoyment first and last. Once a squad has been assembled, there'll be a get-together and then some fun and light training sessions before the festivals begin.
Â
The age for each squad member is 13 and upwards, with no upper limit. If you know of any girls in Years 10 or 11 at school who might be interested, do let them know and point them in our direction. Neil Simpson, who co-ordinates the Friday evening All Stars sessions in partnership with the rest of the Merton CC team, is also heading up this new initiative, so there will be a friendly face at the helm too.
